Maintaining a constant chlorine dose in your pool is essential for the removal of viruses, bacteria and algae, but you’ll also need to boost your chlorine level once a week to prevent any of these problems from rearing their head. This process is called shock treatment.

When shocking a pool, you have two chemical options available to you. One of those is calcium hypochlorite, better known as chlorine shock. Our 6kg chlorine shock granules are ideal for pools with a large volume, offering you a quick, easy and cost-effective shock treatment solution.

What are chlorine shock granules?

Chlorine shock granules are calcium hypochlorite – an unstabilised form of chlorine that is ideal for shock treatments. Because our chlorine pool shock is unstabilised (i.e. no cyanuric acid is added as a stabiliser) it can work as a shock treatment without unsettling the stabiliser balance in your pool water. It works quickly to clear the pool – even if your water is suffering from algae build-up.

When to use chlorine shock pool treatment

Even if your pool is completely clean and clear, we’d recommend shocking your pool at least once every two weeks (once a week during warmer periods). Chlorine shock also plays an important role in opening your pool for the season, as well as being a must if you are experiencing problems with algae build-up.

Can you shock a pool with chlorine tablets?

While our chlorine tablets are great for maintaining healthy chlorine levels in your pool water, they’re not suitable for shock treatments. The slow-release nature of chlorine tablets means they won’t work quickly enough to eliminate new infectants. Unstabilised chlorine granules, however, can be dosed accordingly to offer enough of a shock to clear your pool of any unwanted contaminants.

How much chlorine do you need to shock a pool?

For a shock dose, add 300g of chlorine shock per 6,000 gallons of pool water every two weeks, or once a week in warmer conditions. If algae is present, you may need to double or triple the dose depending on the extent of the build-up.

The following are rough estimates:

  • Bottom of 2m deep pool is visible: 300g per 6,000 gallons
  • Only 1m depth is visible: 600g per 6,000 gallons
  • Can't see the bottom: 1,500g per 6,000 gallons
  • Pool is a very dark green colour: 3,000g per 6,000 gallons

Regardless of the state of your pool, our 6kg shock chlorine tub should suffice in successfully cleaning your pool to a high standard.

Dosing Instructions (Pool: Chlorine Source)

  • Add 75 grams per 10,000 gallons of pool water to increase the chlorine reading by 1 ppm.
  • The granules are dissolved in a bucket of warm water and distributed around the pool or poured into the skimmer basket. Make sure your skimmer basket is free from all other types of chlorine before pouring it in.
  • Maintain a chlorine reading of 1 to 3 ppm.

DO NOT MIX UNSTABILISED CHLORINE WITH ANY STABILISED CHLORINE AS IT WILL EXPLODE

We recommend that you only buy sufficient chlorine shock to last one season. The reason is that the chlorine gradually attacks the plastic materials it is packaged in making them brittle and weak.
