If you’re a pool or hot tub owner, you’ve probably heard of the concept of “shocking” a pool. Shock dosing a pool or hot tub is the process of adding a higher-than-usual dose of oxidiser chemical to the water to clean it via the process of oxidisation. It’s a highly effective way to kill bacteria, remove impurities and keep your pool, hot tub or spa water at the standard it should be – and is something we’d recommend doing weekly.
Pool, spa and hot tub shock treatments can be done using two different types of products. The first is a chlorine shock, though this treatment contains high levels of chlorine that make it suitable only at certain times. The second is a non-chlorine shock, which can deliver similar results but be used on a more regular basis.
Our Oxy Shock hot tub and spa shock treatment is a highly effective, non-chlorine-based pool treatment that you can use regularly to keep your water clean. Powerful, safe and affordable, it’s the perfect pool treatment solution for your needs.
What is Oxy Shock?
Oxy Shock is a non-chlorine oxidiser that kills bacteria and other harmful organic contaminants naturally found in pools, spas and hot tubs. Our Oxy Shock product is made from the chemical potassium peroxymonosulphate, which is an alternative shock treatment that doesn’t release chlorine smells. It’s ideal for weekly use in spas or in pool or hot tub shock treatments, where it acts as a potent oxidising agent that kills off any bacteria found in pool water.
What are the benefits of using a non-chlorine-based hot tub shock treatment?
While chlorine shock treatments are effective and particularly useful for water disinfection, they’re also impractical to use regularly because of the chlorine concentration they add to the water. As such, chlorine treatments are best left for pool and spa shock treatments after heavy use or a water change where it’s desired to raise the chlorine level.
A non-chlorine treatment like Oxy Shock can be used on a regular (typically weekly) basis because it can replicate the process of superchlorination without the additional side effects of high chlorine concentration. Utilising an Oxy Shock treatment offers several benefits:
Kills bacteria and removes harmful impurities and waste such as organic contaminants, body fats and oils
Produces healthier, cleaner water
Activates free bromine and other sanitisers to further decontaminate water
Easy and quick application
Allows for safe resumption of use, typically within 30 minutes
Dissolves quickly and doesn’t leave any residue
Chlorine-free, allowing for regular use in pool, spa and hot tub shock treatments
How to use Oxy Shock spa shock treatment
To use Oxy Shock, simply fill a clean, plastic container with warm water and add the required amount of Oxy Shock to the container. Once you have the correct quantity, stir the container well and distribute the product around the water evenly.
Quantities of Oxy Shock for different pool/spa/hot tub compositions are as follows:
Pool shock: Add 500g per 10,000 gallons of pool water in 100g quantities at a time
Chlorine/bromine spa shock: Shock weekly, adding 30g of Oxy Shock per 1,000 litres of water
Oxy Shock treated spas: Add 30g daily per 1,000 litres of water. Shock dose weekly by adding 100g per 1,000 litres of water.
Whirlpool baths/hot tub shock: Add 25g directly to the water after bathing. For irregularly used baths, add 100g of Oxy Shock before bathing, then drain and refill to bathe.
